Wild lettuce (Lactuca virosa) is also known as 'prickly lettuce' or 'lettuce opium'. The plant has originally spread across Central and Southern Europe and North Asia. It now grows wild in many parts of Europe and also widespread in southern North America. Wild lettuce is an annual but sometimes biennial plant that can grow from 60 to 150 cm tall. The leaves are spinose and toothed and the flowers light yellow and basket shaped.

It is known for having mild sedative and pain relieving properties, due to a milky substance called lactucarium which is found in the leaves and stem of the plant. The effects of lactucarium are considered to be similar to opium, though the substance contains no actual opiates.

Wild lettuce was widely used in the 19th century as an alternative to opium. In the 1970s, the herb gained popularity as both an herbal remedy and a recreational herb. It has been used to treat a number of ailments including asthma, anxiety, cough, insomnia, headaches, pain, tension, sore muscles and menstrual problems. In the past, Wild Lettuce has been prepared for use in a number of way. Most commonly, the leaves and stems would be dried and prepared as a tea. The herb itself is very bitter but with a few spoonfuls of honey, it can be an enjoyable drink. Wild lettuce also can be prepared as a tincture or a smoking blend mixed with tobacco and different herbs.

Wild lettuce have a continued positive effects on overall health, reducing the severity and frequency of a number of ailments when used regularly.

Since wild lettuce has such a sedative effect, a common side effect of the herb is a temporary reduction in sexual desire and performance.
