Japan’s famous ceramics - Raku (which means “simplicity” in the Japanese
translation) appeared around the middle of the 20th century, during the
Momoyama period. In Japan, by that time, its rich traditions of
ceramics production had already been formed, but technically the firing
and glazing methods that are used in Raku — were brought from China,
they were called “San Tsai” and originated in the Henan province during
the Tang Dynasty. However, the Japanese went much further than
'finalized' and 'localized' Chinese techniques. They, so to speak, “shod
a Chinese clay flea”, creating on the basis of San-tsai their own -
completely unique and purely Japanese - method, which is now the
world-famous Raku style.
