Description

Dream herb (Calea) is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. It is native to Mexico and Central America. Its English language common names include Thepelakano (leaves of god), bitter-grass, Mexican calea, dream herb, Calea zacatechichi and many others.

It is used in traditional medicine and ritual in its native range. Dream herb can be used for anxiety, appetite stimulation, arthritis, asthma, cleansing, constipation, diabetes, diarrhea, digestive disorders, dysentery, fever, headache, inflammation, joint problems, malaria, menstrual problems, mental enhancement, pain with breathing, stimulant, swelling, and sleep, also for skin disorders including rashes and burns. Dream herb has been traditionally used for relaxation and to cause vivid dreaming - plant helps remember dreams, side effect include hallucinations.

While awake Calea produces a drowsy effect, and while asleep one may experience more intense dreams. Mexican Indians consider Calea to be a visionary entheogen, although the effects are very subtle and no hallucinogenic alkaloid has been isolated yet.

Usage - drinking as a tea before bedtime or inhaled by smoking.

Making tea - poor half a litre of hot water over 3 to 25 grams of the crushed dried leaves and let it steep for about 15 minutes. It tastes very bitter, so sweeten with a little sugar or honey. Drink the tea on a daily basis before going to bed.
